According to Somerfield’s ongoing Local Life report, a poll that quizzed over 2,000 UK adults, 41% of those surveyed think that EastEnders’ Albert Square embodies the most desirable type of community.
Albert Square triumphed over its rival UK soap locations thanks mainly to its close proximity to local amenities. Easy access to an allotment (desired by 46 per cent of people surveyed), community centre (60 per cent) and tube station (78 per cent) put Walford streets ahead of Coronation Street and Emmerdale.
Fictional failings
One amenity in Albert Square that needs improving, however, is its infamous public house. Modern Britons surveyed say they would much prefer a pint in the Woolpack (19 per cent) or the Rovers’ Return (13 per cent) than the Queen Vic (10 per cent).
According to the Local Life report, the least popular TV neighbourhood was Hollyoaks Village. Only seven per cent of those surveyed felt a university town with lots of young people was their ideal community. The factory and cobbled streets of Coronation Street’s Weatherfield also fared poorly with just 10 per cent of voters opting for this style of neighbourhood.
