Blanket daily coverage has ensured that Channel 4’s Big Brother remains your most searched for TV show. But a glance further down Hotlist’s Top 20 search chart reveals a far more interesting story as the Saturday night prime time duel between the BBC’s Any Dream Will Do and ITV’s Grease Is The Word has spilled over into the online world.
As both shows revealed their respective winners at the weekend, it was Essex man Lee Mead’s victory that allowed Any Dream Will Do to assert search supremacy over its ITV rival. Mead beat stiff competition from Keith Jack and Lewis Bradley to land the lead role in a new version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
And Mead’s victory got you searching as Live Search look-ups for the jubilant Joseph topped 1,400; enough for a place in Hotlist’s Who’s Hot chart. In comparison, Grease victors Susan McFadden and Danny Bayne were anonymous in terms of online searches.
As for the shows themselves, Any Dream, hosted by Graham Norton, recorded 2,748 searches and edged out Grease by a mere 119 queries. This online search duel was much closer than the actual TV viewing figures for the shows. While almost 9 million people tuned in to see Mead graduate from Webber’s “Joseph School”, the finale of Grease attracted a relatively paltry audience of 4.9 million despite the popularity of hosts Zoe Ball and Holly Willoughby and the presence of former TV jungle star David Gest as one of the judges.
