Female sport fans roo-pulsed by Wayne

The England striker has been voted the ugliest sports star of all time in a poll conducted by market research company Onepoll. The firm surveyed 4,000 female sports fans and Rooney, whose features have previously been compared to those of Shrek, took top spot after garnering 34 per cent of the vote.

But Rooney wasn’t the only Premiership star to feel wrath of the nation’s female sports fans. Lanky Liverpool striker Peter Crouch claimed 4th place while former England heroes Peter Beardsley and Paul Gascoigne also took spot in the Ugly Top 10.

Britain’s boxing stars also figured prominently on the chart. Junior-welterweight champion Ricky Hatton’s propensity for post-fight fry-ups counted against him while the trademark arrogance of former featherweight king Prince Naseem Hamed served to raise the hackles of female sports fans as the fighters were branded the 5th and 9th ugliest stars respectively. Clearly, a world championship belt and millions in the bank isn’t always enough.

Not even international sporting greats were exempt from being beaten with the survey’s ugly stick. The highest placed international star was toothy Brazilian maverick Ronaldinho in third position while three-time Wimbledon singles champ Boris Becker paid the price for his apparent absence of eyebrows as grabbed enough votes for 6th place.
