But, with his relationship with Roman Abramovich pushed beyond breaking point, the Mourinho era is over. Love him or hate him, English football will be a duller place without him. Hotlist presents ten memorable Mourinho moments.

1) Touchline sprint at Old Trafford - Three months before he kickstarted Chelsea’s Blue Revolution, Mourinho announced himself to English football as his Porto side scored a last minute winner to knock Manchester United out of the Champions League at Old Trafford. Mourinho sprinted 50 yards from the dug-out to celebrate with the crucial goal with his players. Porto went on to become European champions.

2) "I am a Special One" - Jose signed for Chelsea in June 2004 for an initial salary of £4.2 million. His arrival prompted a media scrum at Heathrow Airport before he announced, in his first press conference, “please don’t call me arrogant but I’m a European champion and I think I am a Special One”.

3) The first trophy - A 3-2 extra-time win over Liverpool in the 2005 Carling Cup final bought the Blues their first trophy under Jose’s stewardship. Unfortunately, Mourinho didn’t see the referee signal the end of the game. He was escorted from the touchline after allegedly inciting Liverpool fans by putting his finger to his lips following Chelsea’s equaliser.

4) “An enemy of football” - Mourinho sparked controversy after implying referee Anders Frisk was biased towards Barcelona in their epic clash with the Blues because he spoke to Barca boss Frank Rijkaard at half-time. Jose received a two match touchline ban and was described by UEFA referee’s chairman Volker Roth as an “enemy of football”. Rumours abounded that he later flouted the ban and was sneaked into the Chelsea dressing room in a laundry basket.

5) Premier League champions - Mourinho predicted in mid-season that Chelsea would secure their first league title since 1955 away at Bolton on April 30 2005. Inevitably, his prophecy came true as a Frank Lampard brace secured a 2-0 win. Chelsea finished the season with 95 points, 29 wins and just 1 defeat.

6) The goal that never was? - A scrambled goal by Luis Garcia dumped Chelsea out of the 2005 Champions League at the semi-final stage. Jose, along with Peter Kenyon, complained endlessly that the ball never crossed the line. Asked for his reaction after Liverpool went on to win the Champions League, Mourinho explained that the best team in Europe doesn’t always become European champions.

7) Barcelona – city of culture - Chelsea’s second epic clash with Barcelona in February 2006 lacked the flair on the first encounter but was an incident-packed affair. Left-back Asier Del Horno was sent off after a collision with Argentinian prodigy Lionel Messi. In the press conference prior to the second leg, Mourinho wound up Catalan journalists as he branded Messi a master of the dramatic arts before adding, with a smirk, “you have got a very high quality of theatre in Barcelona”.

8) A second season of dominance - Having been presented with his Premier League winners medal in April 2006, Jose went to the Matthew Harding end of Stamford Bridge and hurled his medal and club blazer into the crowd. He stated that because the medal was exactly the same as the one he had received a year earlier, he did not need another one and wanted to reward the crowd for their support.

9) - Jose branded a terrier-ist - In May 2007, Mourinho was arrested and cautioned after allegedly refusing to allow police to quarantine his pet dog. He has rushed home from Chelsea's player of the season awards ceremony at the insistence of his wife. Eyewitnesses told reporters that the Chelsea coach freed the animal from the clutches of health officials, bundled the animal into the street and allegedly set it loose before boasting "I've sent my dog to St Tropez".

10) - “No eggs, no omelette” - After months of thinly-veiled criticism of chairman Roman Abramovich for not providing the money to solve Chelsea’s injury crisis, Mourinho addressed the issue again with an extended egg metaphor. “If you have no eggs, you have no omelette. And it depends upon the quality of the eggs. Some are more expensive than others and some give you better omelettes. So when the class one eggs are in Waitrose and you cannot go there, you have a problem.”
