Would Don Fabio add some much-needed steel to England’s approach or would he explode in frustration at his players’ limitations? We kept one eye keenly trained on England's new dug-out dictator throughout the game to find out.

Before kick-off - Capello strides purposefully towards the England bench before appearing to order Stuart Pearce to sit on a specific seat. It takes a brave man to do that! Unsurprisingly, he fails to join in with the national anthem but, to be fair, neither do Jermaine Jenas or Wayne Rooney.

5 minutes - Stalks into his technical area and bellows at Steven Gerrard.

15 minutes - Sits on the bench with arms folded and lips pursed as England control possession. Studiously ignores Stuart Pearce.

22 minutes - David Bentley shanks a right wing cross high over the bar. Camera cuts to Don Fabio grimacing.

31 minutes - Jenas only has to square the ball for Joe Cole to tap it into the net. He takes an extra touch and plays it straight to the Swiss goalkeeper. Capello remains impassive. It’s a good job this is only a friendly.

40 minutes – GOAL! - Left wing wizardry and a killer cutback cross from Joe Cole finds Jenas six yards out. The Spurs man gives England the lead. From the restart, Capello is on the touchline bellowing at his charges to ensure they concentrate until half time.

Half time - Are you sure this is a friendly? England emerge for the second half unchanged. No Sven-style mass substitutions for Capello. The players appear energized by whatever has been said at half time.

56 minutes - Joe Cole hurls himself to the floor in a bid to earn a penalty. The referee denies his requests despite Cole’s supremely continental begging gesture. The Italian effect is starting to take hold.

58 minutes – GOAL! - Seconds after Fabio introduces Peter Crouch and Shaun Wright-Phillips from the bench, Swiss substitute Derdiyok latches onto Yakin’s incisive pass and notches the equaliser with a smart finish. Capello briefly applauds the goal.

62 minutes – GOAL! - Gerrard produces a trademark surge into the penalty area before clipping a cross to Wright-Phillips who dispatches the ball into an empty net. Capello’s arms remain firmly crossed.

65 minutes - Appears to mumble some curses under his breath at no-one in particular. Continues to ignore Stuart Pearce.

73 minutes - Barks orders into the ear of substitute Owen Hargreaves before sending the Manchester United man on to shore up the midfield.

90 minutes - Capello gestures for the defence and midfield to keep their shape after David James flaps at a corner and invites late Swiss pressure. Trouble is eventually averted thanks to a quintessentially English 70-yard lump up the field.

Overall - A cohesive and encouraging England performance meant that Capello’s trademark touchline tantrums were kept in check. Even though it was a friendly, he appeared more hands-on and involved than Sven-Goran Eriksson or Steve McClaren. Expect greater intensity, and the occasional burst of volcanic rage, from Don Fabio once England’s World Cup qualification campaign begins in the autumn.
