Premiership clubs, Formula 1, David Beckham and Wayne Rooney are regularly amongst your favourite sports searches. But there's more to the Sport Hotlist than the world's sporting icons and globally watched events. You will find news on the big sport stars but you'll also discover some bizarre and downright weird sporting events sure to get you searching.
While England’s cricketers have hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons, it’s good to know that another British sporting star is getting you searching for the right reasons. While Andrew Flintoff was busy being named and shamed as a pedalo-phile, rookie Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton was making a name for himself in the Australian Grand Prix.Hamilton, making his F1 debut, claimed an impressive third place in his McClaren and drew oodles of pit lane praise for the maturity of his performance. The media focus on Hamilton that had focused on him being F1’s first black driver was suddenly (and rightfully) shifted to simply discuss his ability and potential.
Although the 22 year old Hamilton was bested on the track, he stole the search spotlight from his more experienced peers recording more queries than any other driver, claiming Hotlist’s chequered flag in front of team mate Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button, Kimi Raikkonen and David Coulthard.
Hamilton’s performance, ably assisted by interest in the return of F1’s trademark glitz and glamour, enabled the sport to burst back onto Hotlist’s Top 30 chart. Racking up an impressive daily average of 2,073 searches over the Australian Grand Prix’s three days of qualifying and racing, Formula 1 also placed third on Hotlist’s Top 5 sports chart, beaten only by the online popularity of David Beckham and the Cricket World Cup.
But the drivers weren’t the only search stars on show in Melbourne. Aussie cricket legend Shane Warne was seen schmoozing at Albert Park while singing siblings Kylie and Danni Minogue were pictured strolling the pit lane with F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone. If Lewis Hamilton’s debut is anything to go by, he’ll be rubbing shoulders with Hotlist’s most popular search stars soon enough.
