Superfight makes De la Hoya a Hotlist knockout

Oscar de la Hoya’s light-middleweight title clash with Floyd Mayweather Jr at Las Vegas’s MGM Grand was billed as the fight of the century and the money, celebrity appearances and search interest it created certainly backed up that grandiose claim.
Ringside seats, with face value of $2,000, were sold for $15,000 on the black market. Two million people paid to watch the fight on HBO pay per view. An estimated $12 million (not including gambling) was generated in Las Vegas on the weekend of the bout. Established Hollywood stars, from Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lopez to Sacha Baron Cohen and Dame Helen Mirren, were scattered throughout the front rows.
De la Hoya himself, despite losing on a split points decision, walked away with $23.3 million for 12 rounds work. Despite the defeat, the Golden Boy a crisp knockout blow to his rival in terms of searches, bobbing and weaving his way into Hotlist’s Top 10 and leaving his opponent trailing in his wake. The 2,455 look-ups De la Hoya generated also made him your most searched for sporting star. Mayweather’s victory made him only the second boxer after Sugar Ray Leonard to win world titles at five different weights.
But with a brash attitude that makes Jose Mourinho look like a paragon of sportsmanship, “Pretty Boy” Floyd seems unlikely to attain the legendary Muhammad Ali-type status that he craves. And although he announced his retirement immediately after winning the fight, it seems unlikely, with rematch rumours abounding and Ricky Hatton also waiting in the wings, that this will be the last we see of Mayweather in the ring.
