Pete Doherty scores for charity
by Lee Harvey, MSN Search Editor
The Babyshambles frontman confounded spectators with a series of match-winning displays and was named player of the tournament as he led his side to victories over teams captained by DJ Spoony, Brian McFadden and perma-tanned Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan.
The Soccer Six event has run annually since 1995 and first made headlines after Britpop rivals Damon Albarn and Liam Gallagher tussled on the field. This classic rock 'n' roll rivalry was reprised this year as Doherty and Razorlight frontman (and one-time Libertines bassist) Johnny Borrell faced off in an ill-tempered clash. The pair engaged in on-field scuffles and several aggressive tackles in what was described as the tournament’s most violent match.
Though he has often made headlines for dubious off the field activites, Doherty’s football pedigree cannot be questioned. His childhood devotion to his beloved Queen’s Park Rangers led him to write a fanzine dedicated to the Super Hoops. At the Soccer Six, he even roped in QPR legend Stan Bowles to manage his team.
It would also be fair to say that the Babyshambles team was moulded in Doherty’s own image as they drafted in ex-West Ham legend Frank McAvennie to play up front.
The Scottish striker was notorious for his playboy lifestyle off the field and was embroiled in a drugs scandal after he retired. It was a somewhat fitting finale that, with the scores tied and extra time looming, that McAvennie set up Doherty to score the last minute winner that ensured a Babyshambles triumph. Anything Didier Drogba can do, Pete can do better!
