While it’s fair to say the likes of David Beckham, Justin Timberlake and Brad Pitt are the dominant males in the world of Hotlist, their supremacy is occasionally challenged by some unlikely figures whose occasional tabloid appearances propelled them into the search stratosphere. Hotlist counts down the Top 10 men who briefly toppled the search status quo after they hit the headlines for unorthodox and sometimes tragic reasons.10. Bradley Cates - Remember the name? Carol Vorderman most certainly does! Eleven-year old Everton supporter Bradley became one of Hotlist’s youngest ever search stars after famously correcting Carol’s numeracy on Countdown in January 2007. He also won friends by declining the offer of a free signed album from host Des O’Connor.
9. Mike Dickin - The late night TalkSPORT radio host, affectionately known as “Britain’s angriest man”, died in a car crash near his Cornwall home on December 18 2006. Searched subsequently soared as the sad story broke. FACT! Dickin was one of the three Mini Cooper stunt drivers in classic Brit flick The Italian Job.
8. Teddy Sheringham - The 40-year old Premiership striker with “three yards in his head” got you searching but it wasn’t his feet doing the talking on this occasion. His on-off relationship with Danielle Lloyd and his key role as a judge in her tainted Miss Great Britain victory ensured he climbed the Hotlist whenever Celebrity Big Brother bully Danielle hit the headlines.
7. Keith Richards - The Rolling Stones seemingly never ending world tour and a cameo as Johnny Depp’s dad in the latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie kept Keef in the Hotlist spotlight in recent months. However, it was an interview he gave in April 2007 that created the biggest online buzz after he claimed to have snorted the cremated ashes of his dead father.
6. Peter Andre - When Katie Price’s other half was rushed to hospital with suspected meningitis back in April the former TV jungle star found himself back on the Hotlist. While he recuperated, inaccurate internet rumours of his subsequent death prompted a surge of searches.
5. Donny Tourette - He came, he drank, he swore a bit and then hopped over the Celebrity Big Brother fence. Towers of London frontman Donny Tourette’s rock ‘n’ roll pantomime antics guaranteed him his 15 minutes of fame in terms of TV infamy and search success.
4. Pete Doherty - Now here’s a man young Donny could learn from. With drug problems, a world famous girlfriend and more court appearances than Andy Murray under his belt, the Babyshambles frontman always finds a way to get you searching. His recent player of the tournament triumph in the charity Soccer Six event at West Ham’s Boleyn Ground was the latest chapter in his ongoing story of search success.
3. Lembit Opik - Ten years as a Liberal Democrat MP unsurprisingly didn’t do much for Lembit’s online popularity. However, when it was revealed that he’d left long-term partner Sian Lloyd and started a new relationship with Cheeky Girl Gabriela Irimia, Opik became a Hotlist star recording the most search queries for any politician.
2. James Brown - Soul Brother Number 1; the Godfather of Soul; the Hardest Working Man in Show Business; James Brown was an undisputed legend of music. He died on Christmas Day aged 73 and the reaction of fans and tributes from across the world allowed him to top Hotlist’s search chart in the last week of 2006.
1. Saddam Hussein - Convicted of war crimes against Iraqi Shi’ites and sentenced to death on November 5 2006, Saddam Hussein was eventually executed by hanging on December 30. It was subsequently revealed that his death had been filmed on a mobile phone and posted on the web. The global coverage of Saddam’s death and the controversy of the video of the execution made the former Iraqi President your most searched for person in the opening weeks of 2007.
