Hollywood's most famous football fans

Find pictures of Aston Villa fan Tom Hanks with Live Search (Image © Joel Ryan/PA Wire/PA Photos)It wouldn’t have happened in the days of Chopper Harris and Emlyn Hughes but the global profile of the Premier League means there’s no shortage of Hollywood stars stepping up to pledge their allegiance to English football teams. And, in some cases, these movie icons are making some unlikely choices about who they choose to support.

Tom Hanks chose the premiere of his latest film Charlie Wilson’s War to announce his love of Aston Villa. Was it a cynical move to boost exposure for his movie or has the Oscar-winning Forrest Gump star been impressed by Martin O’Neill’s man management skills and the blistering pace of Gabriel Agbonlahor? Either way, Hanks joins the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and Prince William among the ranks of Villa’s famous fans.

But Hanks isn’t the first leading man to declare his love for a Premier League team. In January 2007, Sylvester Stallone appeared on the pitch at Goodison Park draped in an Everton scarf. After his somewhat erratic goalkeeping performance in Escape to Victory, it’s not known if he passed on any words of wisdom to fellow American keeper Tim Howard.

Unlikely A-list footie fans

Possibly the least glory-hunting Hollywood football fan is actress Cameron Diaz. The Charlie’s Angels star is a supporter of struggling West London side Brentford. It is believed that she became a fan after becoming a regular customer at a Hollywood café owned by an expat Bees supporter.

Inevitably, some American stars have succumbed to the lure of the Premier League’s big 4 clubs. Film maker Michael Moore has been spotted at Arsenal games and it is said that he became a Gunners fan whilst in London performing a one-man stage show. In fact, Arsenal can lay claim to having the biggest pool of famous fans with Jackie Chan, Freddie Prinze Jr, Owen Wilson, Spike Lee and Kevin Costner all having attended Gunners games or having declared their support for the club.
