Cinema's least convincing couples revealed

So say the 3,000 movie-goers who voted in a Pearl and Dean survey to name and shame cinema’s least convincing couples.

Thanks to their chemistry-free relationship in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen topped the Pearl and Dean poll. Despite their best efforts, Portman’s character Senator Padme Amidala and Anakin Skywalker couldn’t replicate the on-screen passion of Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher in the first three Star Wars movies.

More chemistry-free couples

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s performance in Gigli was voted into second place in the survey despite the fact that the pair were a real life couple at the time the film was made. Another real-life couple to make the Top 10 were Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman whose dalliances in Stanley Kubrick’s Eye Wide Shut also left audiences cold.

Cinema’s least convincing British couple were Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Voters felt their on-screen relationship, which was also routinely by BBC film critic Mark Kermode, was riddled with old-fashioned romance and was out of step with the movie’s swashbuckling action.

The Pearl and Dean poll was also bad news for Madonna. The queen of pop is no stranger to movie turkeys and her performance with Italian actor Adriano Giannini in Swept Away, a movie directed by her husband Guy Ritchie, was enough to earn her 4th place in the survey.
